Rolling With It

It was tough getting out of bed, knowing we had to check out by noon. We almost made it, 12:30 pm was pretty good. We were all excited to get going. The next night stop was for the Brimark Inn, west of Souix City, SD, but a lot of miles to see in between.

We wound our way through southern Wisconsin on backroads, starting at House on the Rock. What a bizarre, eclectic, fascinating collection and look into the thoughts of Alexander Jordan, its creator and inhabitant. His background was in construction, working for his father. The house evolved organically for Jordan, adding whatever struck his interests next. If it didn't work out the way he had envisioned, he tore it down and gave it another go. Along the way, he collected and created whatever interested him.

We also drove by Taliesin, home to Frank Lloyd Wright's house, barn and 5000 sq' studio. The contrast between the two great minds was hard to miss. Wright, a consummate draftsman and Jordan a self-taught, trial by error designer.

Onto Wyalosing State Park to see the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers. Beautiful park and Camille's first sighting of the Mississippi.
